Description

The history of the Monastery of Saint Georgios is lost in the depths of the centuries.
The Christian temple was built near or on an ancient temple of Apollon-Helios. In this place was also the oracle of Selinundius Apollon. The Monastery was moved to its current location in an area a little above the Thermal Baths of Edipsos and at a distance of 13 km from the village of Edipsos.

The old site of the Monastery is indicated by a small church named after Saint Georgios.
In a location of amazing beauty, with very fertile soil and quite large property, the Monastery suffered several disasters during the Turkish occupation. The last time it was attacked was in 1821, resulting in the destruction of valuable relics and intellectual deposits.
The current women's Monastery of Saint Georgios is beautiful and very interesting in terms of the relics of its temple. It is really worth a visit for a pilgrimage as well as a tour of the surrounding area.
