Description
The castle of Oreoi is located at the eastern end of the present city of Orea. The hill on which it is built reaches a height of 30m. and it seems to be artificial, the result of successive habitation from at least the Proto-Hellenic period until modern times.
The castle of Oreoi dates back to Middle Byzantine times (11th century AD) and is founded on the acropolis of the classical era (4th century BC). It is known from the action of the Krystian knight Licarios, who captured the castle in 1275 AD. and used it as a stronghold against the Franks, while it was then used by the Ottomans as a place of residence.
The formation and course of the NW part of the walls of the 4th c. e.g. shows that the entrance into the enclosure must have been ensured by a gate, which would have been located on the western slopes of the hill, where the slope presents a gentler slope. Between the gate and the beach, they extend to a depth of 40cm up to 2m. the residential remains, but also parts of two roads, which were gradually excavated during the last 40 years.
