Description
The Tower of Drosini or the Tower of Gouves is one of the most famous sights in North Evia. Built on a hill in the historic settlement of Gouves in Evia, it is believed to have been built in the 19th century, during the Ottoman period, by Ibrahim Aga and then passed into the hands of Georgios Drosinis' grandfather, Konstantinos Petrokokkinos, and then to himself poet. It is a tower house with two floors that exudes a Turkish air, integrating the visitor into the climate of that time. Today it belongs to the Municipality of Istiaea - Edipsos and functions as a museum. Inside it are housed personal belongings of Georgios Drosinis, while his fame is accompanied by various, to a degree terrifying, legends that talk about the brutality of Ibrahim Aga and his victims who met a tragic end by him inside the tower, while he dwelt in him. In addition, every year, towards the end of June, the outside area of the tower hosts the "Drosinia", a celebration in memory of the poet, which is accompanied by recitations of his poems by secondary school and high school students of North Evia, amateur skits in which they participate , as well as the awarding of secondary school students who took part in the competition held for the study of his works.
